Painting Industry Experience
Number one, you want to make sure that they have repaint industry experience and lots of it. The reason that that’s important is because if they do not have lots of repaint industry experience they’ll build an entire website around keywords that have not been verified and lots of painting businesses to be organically searched. They’ll put content all over your page for things that no one is looking for and they will fail to structure it in a way that will actually get repaint clients to see you online in the three pack and on the first page of Google.
Strategy vs. Tactics
Web designers need to be strategic, not blindly tactical. There are a lot of web developers that serve painting contractors who are more concerned with just getting you into some kind of recurring, cheap, retainer relationship and they’ll never take a look at the competition, where you stand from a page authority, domain authority, back links, reviews, content, structure, and also look at the locations in the markets to figure out where you need to be. They’re very tactical, meaning you can sign up for some kind of cookie cutter service and maybe it works and maybe it doesn’t, but they’re not going to sit down and really look at your painting business and ask themselves, “Okay, maybe we don’t even need to be in this market, maybe we need to move over here. Maybe the competitive landscape is too challenging here and we need to go find a place we can get some quick wins.” You want somebody who’s cognitively engaged in your panting company’s web strategy, just like you would be in your business.
They need to be brutally honest with you. Sometimes people will just take your money if it’s a little or a lot and they won’t tell you, “I think you can make a lot happen in this market.” They won’t tell you, “I appreciate taking $300 dollars a month from you, but it’s going to take two years before you see any results with this small expenditure of assets online.” You want them to be straight with you, and you want them to be solvent enough to where they can turn away customers and it’s not going to hurt them. You just always want a mentor in any situation to be able to be brutally honest with you, because if they can’t give you really good advice because they need the money, or they’re not going to sit down and really look at things or emphasize with you, they won’t make good recommendations.
Focused on Painting Lead Conversion
Finally, painting contractor website design revolves around conversion of leads. You can build a beautiful, pretty, graphically appealing website that never gets found, and you can also build one that is built for the owner and for the web designer, but it is not built for the client. Guess what? The client, that’s the only vote that matters in the painting business. If the client shows up at your website and says, “Information’s not here that I need,” based on surveys and studies, and we know what the information is, and they don’t convert because all of that information is absent, or because the site is structured and that information’s been buried and it’s not on each and every page, then you’re going to be in trouble. A company that typically doesn’t work in the repaint industry a lot won’t know what those things need to be.
